Prayer Shawl

In March 2007, The Prayer Shawl Ministry began at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church. Long time member, Jerry Gordon, saw a television interview with some ladies from a Birmingham Presbyterian Church Shawl Ministry. Later, she was visiting with a friend who told her about the Shawl Ministry at a Methodist Church in Gulf Shores, Alabama. This led Jerry to believe she could start a Prayer Shawl Ministry at Lester Memorial.

With her guidance, several ladies were called to form a group. Anne Murphree, Doris Corr, Dixie Daily, Skipper Gilbert, Betty Jo Ashley, Joan Tolbert, Wade Waggoner, Joan Ledford, Carol Reid, JoAnn Shea, and Mary Nell Holt were the original group.  The group changes from time to time as some leave and others join.  They continue to meet to knit and crochet on Mondays from 10:00 to 12:00 in the Conference Room.

The groups welcomes others to join, no particular skill is required. With the love of knitting and the desire to share, over 1000 (Sept. 2018) shawls have been sent to loved ones, friends and acquaintances around the United States. Each shawl has been blessed and prayed over by the knitters and the ministers of the church.

Yarns are most often found in Betty Wilson's "My Favorite Things Knit and Yarn Shop" in Oneonta. Mrs. Wilson serves as Mentor to the Knitters, solving their knitting problems.

The Knitters get as much pleasure and fulfillment as the shawl recipients receive. They have become a close-"knit" group and look forward to their work and times together.

The Ministry is supported by gifts from church members as well as others.
