NOMADS
RETIREMENT WITH A PURPOSE
Roger & Sandy Westerman
NOMADS: Nomads On a Mission Active in Divine Service. Or Northern Old Methodists Avoiding Deep Snow.
NOMADS began in 1986 as a way for Snow-Birders from the upper mid west to have ”something to do” during their trips south. In 2000 NOMADS took on a national status with affiliation with the General Board of Global Ministries, Mission Volunteers. The program offers Retired people with RV’s the opportunity to share their time and skills doing United Methodist project.

The year is divided into 3 week projects. During cold weather, projects are located in the deep south and move northward as the year progresses. You work 4 days a week with Friday through Sunday off to rest and explore the local area. Project lists come out twice a year and you can pick the ones you want. There is a short description of the work to be done and what facilities are available at the campsite. The sponsoring agency must provide a place to park the RV with water, electric , and either a dump site or sewer hookups. You can work as many or as few projects as you like.
Each day is begun with a short devotional put on by a different couple each morning. It normally consists of a bible verse, short inspiration message, singing a song or 2, and maybe a light or funny story to start the day off right. After this the team leader will go over the work that has been accomplished and what still needs to be done. The work day is normally 6 hours with plenty of time for breaks.
Sandy and I have been members since 2005 and have done over a dozen projects. Some of the places we have visited include; Big Pine Key, FL, Orlando, FL, Cedar Key, FL, Savannah, GA, Pine Village, IN, Oxford, MS, Selma, AL, Sylvania, AL. Our projects have included everything from pick and shovel work to electrical wiring, from canning to cleaning, from painting to more painting. We have been blessed with the many friends we have made and the feeling of accomplishment earned from a job well done.

Brief history of Dooly Campground: A Circuit Riding preacher, Reverend George Embry, in 1874 felt his horse pulling at the rein, attempting to go up stream on Pennahatchee Creek. The Circuit Rider allowed the horse to go. A short distance up the creek the horse came to a clear, cool, pool of water. The sight inspired Reverend Embry and he experienced a vision of God's call to build a campground. The vision became a reality in 1874. On Saturday July 18, 1874 the Vienna Methodist Church was filled to capacity with folks who came to consider building a campground. Funds were raised (almost $100.00) to build a Tabernacle. The first session of the Dooly County Camp Meeting was held in a slow, cool, autumn rain, on September 10, 1874. Many were converted, revival began in Dooly County, commitment was made to build a permanent site, $2,000.00 was raised and Dooly County Campground was off the ground. The First Camp Meeting held under the permanent Tabernacle began on August 25, 1875, under the leadership of Presiding Elder, Dr. Joseph S. Key, who was later elected a Bishop. God's camp at Dooly, begun in 1874, supported now by the Americus District United Methodist Churches, continues today under the same Tabernacle, spanning almost a century and a quarter.
